In this fast paced world many people suffer from heartburn and indigestion due to the lifestyle they lead. Healthy eating habits are essential in avoiding such problems. It is also quite possible that there can be underlying issues that may be part of the problem. Heartburn is usually a symptom of GERD or acid reflux. Often it is triggered by foods that you have eaten, or it can be part of a stressful lifestyle. There are also a number of underlying conditions that can trigger heartburn and should you not be able to resolve your issues with over the counter heartburn treatments then it’s important to be checked out by a doctor.
The first thing to do is to make adjustments to your diet in order to see if this brings you any relief. Avoiding hot and spicy foods as well as ones which have a high acid content will most often provide relief for many. If this does not work, then the next dietary method to try is going on a bland food diet.
Too often people will simply reach for a bottle of Tums or Rolaids in order to solve the immediate problem. This may work for a time, but until you address the underlying issues the problem is most likely to continue. Heartburn can be caused by ulcers, a hiatus hernia or even gallbladder issues. In some rare cases is can be caused by a bacteria in your stomach. The good news is that all of the more serious causes can be treated in a number of different ways with the help of a doctor or specialist.
If you only suffer occasionally with symptoms of heartburn then it’s unlikely that any treatment is needed other than over the counter medications. If it is more frequent then look toward your diet for a solution. Some foods and liquids to avoid are coffee and cola drinks; citrus fruits can also be a trigger. If you take a lot of aspirins or anti-inflammatory medication, then these can be the cause of the problem. These two over the counter medications can have a very harmful effect on the stomach, with long term use.
For the most part, heartburn is not a serious problem but it can lead to inflammation of the esophagus. Should this start to happen it’s important to see a doctor as this problem can become serious. Esophagitis can lead to a narrowing of the esophagus and you could experience difficulty in swallowing, or in the extreme, you could have it progress to the point where it is bleeding.
There are a number of things you can do to help prevent problems. Raising the legs on the head of your bed will help to prevent acids from going up into the throat area. Give yourself at least 2 hours after a meal before lying down. If you are accustomed to having a nap consider napping in a recliner chair. One of the most important things to consider is weight loss. If you are overweight this might be the only solution you need to stop heartburn.
The good news is, this problem is usually not serious, and with some simple lifestyle adjustments you can most likely cure your problems on your own.
