I just want to mention here how carefully you need to tread around this issue. Most young girls are extremely conscious of their bodies and doing or saying anything that makes her feel "fat" could lead to a serious eating disorder. Trust me I have been there. If she continues to gain weight even though she is active and you have taken the junk food mostly out of the picture (I wouldn't remove it completely unless you say that YOU are trying to eat healthier and it helps not to have it in the house) I would take her to the doctor for some blood tests. There could be a thyroid or metabolism issue that needs to be checked out.

Well as you just mentioned, the exercise is not the problem as she seems to get enough of moving around. What you need to focus on is getting her to eat less and to eat healthier. As people have mentioned, accompanying her is also a good idea.

That's good point Rose. By accompanying her in doing exercises or other outdoor activities, you will get the benefits of the activities yourself. Is it hard to ask her take more vegetables and fruits?

I agree that limiting junk food and getting her moving is the key. If need be, I would get out there and play with her yourself if that's what it takes. Walking, bike riding, swimming, any kind of sport like soccer, baseball, basketball, etc. It will be time consuming on your part, but if you keep her active everyday I'll bet you'd see a difference in no time.

I think the real cause is obvious: she eating a lot. Yes she is pretty active, but what kind of activities does she usually do? Mental activities wouldn't burn your calorie so much.

Go for a walk, ride a bike, play a game of softball. Find something that the two of you can do together or as a family. If she continues to gain weight though I would take her to the doctor for a check-up just to be sure everything is okay.

I would get her a check up with the doctor to be sure everything is okay. My suggestion to get her moving more would be to go for walks together. My kids love walking with me.

I think watching her diet is a good place to start. You might want to get her into an organized athletic activity to give her more opportunities for exercise. If she doesn't start to lose some weight, then I agree with Reform, definitely have the doctor check her out.

How old is your daughter? She might be having a slow metabolism and that is the cause that she is gaining weight. Go to a doctor for a check up to determine the real cause why she is gaining weight.

I've noticed that my daughter is gaining weight. She is pretty active but she eats a lot. I'm limiting her junk food by not having it in the house. What are some other ways I can get her up and moving more without saying- honey you are gaining weight!
