My Dad has had back surgery twice once on his upper back and once on his lower back. The recovery period did not go well but he is better now. He still has flare-ups from time to time and sees a chiropracter for that and it seems to help.

Have you considered a chiropractor? I've seen one for the past 10 years and he's been great to work with. I'm just lucky enough that my work insurance covers his services.

I have back problems too and I had a MRI. I won't have surgery. I went through traction and a lot of physical therapy. It seemed to get better. I'm too young for surgery!

I had back surgery too. I was in a car accident and I had two spinal fusions. One in my neck and the other in my lower back. Now I can`t work and I have been fighting disability for almost 4 years. My doctor wants to take the hardware out but I have no insurance now. I also have wondered how my back would be if i had not had that surgery. My neck I did need and it helped. The only problem I have with that is I can`t turn my head too far either way. But I don`t have pain like in my back.

I have back trouble to and have had two back surgeries-NEVER AGAIN! Unless they tell me I will not be able to walk if I don't have it, I am never having back surgery again. It didn't help and I really have to wonder if it didn't hurt instead. The best thing that's helped me is to do my exercises for my back in a heated pool. That works like a charm to help my back be the best it can be.

Thats what I was told years ago, after almost 2 years of PT and having insurance but it did not cover MRI's (what insurance does that?). I wonder now with US having universal healthcare if I can get an MRI, I know something is still wrong with my back and I would love to know that I will not end up in a wheel chair one day.
