Another thing to try is a new hobby if you feel the urge to indulge. If you were used to having a drink while with certain friends, you need to change friends. Stay away from the others who encouraged you to drink with them.

If I were addicted to alcohol, one of the things I'd do is something physical in hopes of killing the desire to drink. Physical activity often can help people overcome various addictions.

That is a very good question Alyson. Maybe Bob can enlighten us on what the psychologist did to his patients.
I think that alcohol could be substituted with coffee or softdrinks just to satisfy the cravings of the body. I presume that it is not easy to substitute an addiction with another thing though.

If you try to quit the addiction without a positive, replacement behavior you won't be as successful as you desire.

That is a good step in the right direction depending on what habit you are trying to replace. For other addictions more support is needed. Drug and alcohol addiction for example I do not think could be beat by just replacing the habit.
