I am convinced that something must replace the addiction to overcome and get rid of it. Can you suggest a replacement for smoking? I've been trying to stop for ages.

The thing is you have to quit for you. Not for your wife or kids or it won't work. My husband quit for a year and went right back to it. It is very bad for your health but until you are ready to do it it won't work.

Does your addiction have a negative impact on your family?  Do you get violent or abusive when you drink?  If you do, then it's time to consider quitting.  If you don't maybe there's no problem?

Do you mean that we should only stop the addiction we have when there is already a problem? I think it is better to subdue the addiction before it even creates a problem of any sort.

Replacing the addiction with another activity is a good idea but it is really not easy to replace the addiction we have. There is a reason why we are addicted to that something because we find comfort or enjoyment in that thing.

No I am not violent or abusive. But I do have to quit now. I am having problems health wise and if I don`t stop drinking I could end up in the hospital. I have already been there and don`t want to go back. It`s time to get some help I think.

Admission is a good start. It is difficult to solve the problem when you are not even aware that you have the problem. Than find something more interested (and healthier as well) to replace the thing you are addicted to.

One suggestion that I heard about was to replace the addiction with some other kind of behavior that is more appropriate than the addiction.  The more I thought about it, the more it makes sense since there's an old saying that nature abhors a vaccuum.

I think first you must get out of the habit. They say it takes 30 days to break a habit. Once you have depending on what it is I think you should find something healthy to take the place of it. If it is drugs or alchohol you may need to change who you hang around even.
