I do think that it is over diagnosed and it's not just the doctors it's the teachers in schools too encouraging parents to have their kids tested because the teachers are unable to keep their classroom under control. Some children certainly need to be on medication but in sone very mild cases of ADHD children are being over medicated for no reason whatsoever.

He would just hide them. Right now he takes nothing and I see no difference with or without the medication. He does have something wrong with him but I believe that it`s something entirely different. They refuse to do a complete psych exam on him. He is 15 now. I am divorced from his mom. While she was pregnant with him she drank and smoked pot behind my back. I guess it wasn`t enough to catch it at birth. He also has an aunt on his moms side who is mentally retarded. I think he may have some kind of learning disability. Something close to mental retardation.
Cowboy1~ Has your son gone through any special education testing at his school? My son has ADHD and Bipolar. He went through some lengthy testing for his special education plan. It helped a lot.

I do agree that some doctors just say its ADHD when they are tired of hearing from the parents all the time. I have to say that I do believe that in some cases it is true and the kids really do have ADHD, but not in all cases.
I know a few parents that say- my kids act up and they get medicine. It's that easy. I don't have to deal with them anymore. I think it's wrong.
I think these "lazy" parents are giving a bad name to the parents who are not lazy and the kids that really need the meds to live a more normal day to day life.

My nephew had to go through all kinds of tests and therapy before his doctor finally diagnosed him with ADD. My sister really had to fight to get him the medication.

I have two children with ADHD and I truly resent the implication that because they were on medication that I am a lazy or bad parent. Try doing some research on just how much effect this disorder has on a child before you talk about something that you clearly don't have a clue about.

I have to say that you hit the nail smack dab on the head! It makes me SO MAD when I hear about this. I say – parent your child and stop medicating them.
OK- I don't think that all kids should not be medicated, if they are really severe and the parents aren't looking for an easy way to control their child, then they might need the meds.
I'm tired of this easy parenting that doctors are letting lazy parents get away with!

I think that it is a catch all diagnosis when they can't figure out what is wrong or a child has a lot of energy or gets into trouble a lot. When I was a kid it wasn't like that.

It seems that every time I talk to someone who has an out of control child, their child has been diagnosed with ADHD. Do you think this disorder is over diagnosed?
