I think you eventually learn how to deal with the symptoms. I don't know that it ever really goes away but you can learn how to work around it. It's horrible though.

It is great that he no longer needs the medicine to help him focus. I didn't know that this was a disease that you ever really got over. I thought once you started the meds, you were on them forever. That is excellent though!

The thing about ADD symptoms is that they vary from person to person and they can come in waves for a sufferer. That is part of why an accurate diagnosis can be difficult to obtain. Generally, though, inability to concentrate, remember and focus is primary and must be present to the point of causing difficulties. Hyperactivity may or may not be present. Some people are helped tremendously by meds, others are not. It's not an easy thing to have since half of the people (even doctors) don't believe it's a real problem.

So what are the symptoms of these and how old can it start? I always thought it was hyperactivity but reading some of these it seems not.

I read about many people being diagnosed with ADD and ADHD, I am beginning to wonder why. I know it's inherited, but doesn't the food that we eat or the environment affect it?

I wish I had taken this path years ago with my son. He has been on so many medications through out his life. I wish I could go back and have him helped without the medications because they take a toll on him.

LOL @ Chances. Exactly we are all stressed to the point of distraction at some point in life. I think everyone has a little touch of ADD ADHD at some point.

Prozac did help me with this for a short time after the birth of my second child, but since then I have just been handling things on my own and things have been fine. Little stressed at times, but who isn't?

You know, what I find amazing is that all of these people are now being diagnosed with ADHD or ADD. I don't know if it's just the fact that it has been identified now or what. My grandson has ADHD and we chose not to give him medication but to allow him to try to train himself. Our hope that he could didn't come true and he is horrible in school. He is graduating from high school now though. He is extremely intelligent and can quote almost anything that has been read to him. However, if he has to read it, he takes forever to do so. But he will still remember it.

Interesting that anti-depressants helped you two. I have ADD as well as two of my kidsbut we all needed stimulant medication to help. You're lucky that your son no longer needs meds. It only happens about 25% of the time that people actually outgrow ADD.

It is interesting to hear that your son no longer takes medication. How is he doing now that he is off of his meds? My son is 17 and has ADHD as well. Learning is a huge struggle for him.

When my son was 7 years old he was diagnosed with ADHD. His doctor also said I was Adult ADD. I always knew I had a hard time learning. When I was young they never heard of ADD or ADHD. My son took anti-depressants called Nortriptyline. ( I`m not sure of the spelling) I refused Ritalin. I was put on Paxil. We both did very well. He is now 22 and no longer takes meds, but I still do.
