Heartburn and acid regurgitation are the main symptoms of GERD, though some people with GERD don't experience any heartburn episodes. Treatment for GERD will usually start with certain lifestyle modifications and dietary changes.  Yell

So, you are saying you can have heartburn but not have acid reflux disease?  That is good to know.  The commercials make you believe that all heartburn is going to hurt you and cause damage to your esophagus. 

I had really bad heartburn while I was pregnant.  I guess it must have been the acid reflux.  Afterwards, it got better.  I was glad because it was miserable.  I would even get heartburn after I drank water sometimes.

Yes, there are a lot of terms! 

It is called heartburn when you have problems occasionally.  This would be like someone getting heartburn after they eat chili.  This is also called Acid Reflux. 

Acid Reflux Disease and GERD (Gastroesophogeal Reflux Disease) are the same thing.  GERD is just the more scientific term.  "Gastro" is pertaining to the stomach, and "esophogeal" is your throat where you swallow.  They diagnose you with ARD or GERD when you have symptoms regularly – like several times a week.

It seems like there are so many terms that seem to refer to heartburn.  Is acid reflux the same as GERD?  And do they both just mean frequent heartburn?  If not, how do they differ?
