Diverticulitis

Diverticulitis is a common problem which normally occurs with age and bad eating habits. It’s only in the last century that this condition has become prevalent, mostly because of our bad eating habits and lack of fresh fruit and vegetables in our diets. It was first seen in the industrial age when the people started shifting to processed food and adopted eating habits that were detrimental to their bodies.

People over sixty are usually the most common age group to suffer with this condition. Diverticulitis is caused by small pouches are formed in the intestinal tract. These pouches are not harmful and many people are not even aware of their existence until something goes wrong. Problems normally occur when these pouches become inflamed and infected. This causes people to experience pain in the abdominal area as well as bleeding.

Those who consume normal amounts of fiber in their daily meals throughout the day do not normally suffer with diverticulitis. Those who are diagnosed with diverticulitis can normally correct the condition by increasing the intake of fiber in their diet. Doctors will also suggest a change in diet and may recommend a specialized diet or supplement if the condition continues to persist.

Treatment may also include antibiotics depending on how severe the condition is when the next attack occurs. This is intended to remove any infection that may be occurring in the intestinal tract. If the diverticulitis is diagnosed as being severe the doctor may put his patient in the hospital for a few days in order to get the condition under control. In most cases though, people normally stay at home and make adjustment to their diet and lifestyle.

Many doctors will recommend that their patients see a nutritionist to get advice on the different foods that one should avoid as well as ones that should be introduced into the diet, in order to prevent further occurrences of diverticulitis.

It’s also important for people to understand the symptoms of diverticulitis. Often one of the first things a person thinks of when they have this condition is cancer. This is due to seeing a change in bowel habits as well as blood in the stool. For some there may be sudden onset of pain in the side of the abdomen on the left. The pain may start off mild and become much more intense in the days to come. The abdomen will most likely be tender and one may also have vomiting or nausea accompanied by a fever. Any of these symptoms should be cause for concern and should be an indication that a doctor’s advice is needed.

If you doctor suspects diverticulitis he will most likely send you for tests in order to make a complete diagnosis. With early treatment a person can be back to their normal life in a few days. Antibiotics will clear up any infection and then the treatment will consist of diet changes as well as lifestyle changes. Once you introduce these changes into your daily routine it is quite possible that you will never have a flare up again. Many people have this condition and continue to lead an active life. Of course the best thing is avoid having a problem in the first place and with a diet high in fiber you should never experience any problems.

High Cholesterol

Some people think that there is nothing to worry about when it comes to their cholesterol levels. They think that their cholesterol levels do not make a big difference their health or lifestyle. Nothing could be further from the truth. Doctors now are very aware of the damage that bad cholesterol can have on a person’s entire body.

The truth is that both good and bad cholesterol level matters a great deal. Having high levels of bad cholesterol can lead to a heart attack or a heart stroke. You do need to worry about it and you do need to start doing something to reduce your cholesterol and the risks that come with it.

There are many things that can increase bad cholesterol level in the blood. The most common reasons are increased weight and a diet of junk food or processed foods. Stress is another common reason for seeing increased cholesterol levels. Those who do not exercise regularly and burn off fats in the body as well as calories are putting themselves at a much higher risk than those who follow a healthy lifestyle. Mostly people with an unhealthy life style are suffering with increased levels of bad cholesterol.

If you suffer with high cholesterol levels then it’s important for you to get it under control and bring the high levels back to the normal range. You can start by changing your daily routines. Start working out regularly and think seriously about reducing your weight. These two things alone will go a long way to keeping you off medications and getting your life back into balance.

By getting up a bit earlier and spending some time exercising or walking is not hard to accomplish and it will go a long way to restoring you to healthy cholesterol levels. Smoking and drinking are a major cause of high cholesterol levels and they should be brought into a normal range for alcohol and if at all possible, quit smoking.

If you are suffering from high cholesterol then you should consider changing your diet. Simply paying more attention to what you are eating and whether or not the foods are good for you will go a long way in helping to reduce your levels. Increasing your intake of foods that are more natural, such as raw vegetables and fruits will help a great deal in bring down your levels. Giving up junk food is another necessity as these are normally very high in cholesterol.

Always look at the ingredients of everything you buy when at the grocery store. By becoming a more aware consumer you’ll be surprised at what you have been putting into your body. Consider going on a cholesterol free diet. Any book store will have many books that can help you to learn how to do this and do it safely. If all else fails have a doctor refer you to a nutritionist in order to work out a heart healthy eating plan.

It goes without saying that fried foods should never be a part of your diet. Eating foods that are boiled or grilled are much healthier for your heart, and just as easy to cook as fried foods. Some foods can be cooked in oils that are heart healthy and there are many recipes that you can find on the internet to help you in this endeavor. Your method of cooking and the oils that you use will be a great help in adjusting your diet to something that is still tasty to eat and yet good for your heart.
